Salinas Owners & Pilots Association

Mystery Flight

On May 4th. Several SOPA members meet at the Landing Zone and got ready to embark on a flight. Nobody except for Jeff Soares knew the ultimate destination. He provided clues and eventually people found their way to Georgetown and then dinner at Harris Ranch.

The way the Mystery Trip worked was that each participant received a series of numbered envelopes. Each envelope contained a clue that when using the Sectional would help you decipher the airport you fly to next. Hopefully you figured out the clue correctly and flew to the correct airport. Within that first clue you also figured out instructions on where to walk/look at the airport to find the clue to the next numbered envelope you needed to open. If you figured it out correctly, you would open the correct envelope, figured out the clue to the next airport and where to look on the ground for the clue to the next envelope you were to open. And the process continued until we all met up at our final destination.  Confusing? Good...  Example:  You receive 10 envelopes numbered 1 through 10. At the Salinas airport, I instruct you to open envelope #3. Within envelope #3 is your clue to the next airport and where you are suppose to go to get the clue to your next envelope. You figured out Clue #3 which sends you to Calexico.  You land in Calexico, and look at Clue #3 again for the clue to where you are supposed to look to find out which envelope to open next. It instructs you to look at the menu in the restaurant and find out what number in the menu is the Jalapeno Burger. It happens to be #6. That will be your next envelope to open for your next clue.

NOTE: If you think you are going to just sit back and relax while others figure out their clues or just monitor CTAF, you may end up going to the wrong airport(s).  Not everybody flys to the same airports or has the same clues.

EMERGENCY: All pilots will have an envelope marked EMERGENCY. If you get lost or fall way behind, you open the envelope and it will tell you where our final destination is. If you use it, you owe Jeff a drink. He usually doesn't pay for drinks.
